Besso is the breakfast of champions. In Ethiopia it is known as fuel for long-distance runners. Made of roasted barley and a dash of cinnamon, it’s ready to go. Simply mix with water or your choice of milk and give it a good stir. If you like, you can add some sugar, maple syrup, or a sweetener of your choice. This is the simple version. But why not turn your besso into a delicious smoothie by adding frozen banana and a dollop of peanut butter? Besso can be added to breakfast cereals or had on its own with some water. It is versatile, nutritious, easy to make, and delicious.

I was so happy to find this. This is the besso I grew up with. It's perfectly roasted and has just the right amount of cinnamon and cardamom. So good and so easy.
I remember my parents making besso. I've been adding this to my post-run smoothies (with banana and peanut butter as suggested), and it's the best. It's filling, nutritious, and has a wonderful, nutty taste.
